La Bella addormentata nel bosco (The Sleeping Beauty)

by Rudolf Nureyev
Teatro alla Scala, Milan 2025-12-18 ... 2026-01-13

With the magnificent ballet The Sleeping Beauty , choreographed and staged by Rudolf Nureyev, Teatro alla Scala presents one of the most iconic works of the classical repertoire in the 2025/26 season. Based on Charles Perrault’s beloved fairytale La Belle au bois dormant and set to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, this enchanting ballet unfolds a dreamlike world of elegance, virtuosity, and timeless grace. Performances run from December 18, 2025, to January 13, 2026 – a perfect cultural highlight to combine with the festive season in Milan. Whether strolling through elegantly decorated shopping streets or taking winter day trips to Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, or Bergamo, a visit to Lombardy becomes even more magical with this ballet experience.
Teatro alla Scala, inaugurated in 1778, is one of Europe’s foremost cultural institutions. Its splendid architecture, renowned acoustics, and artistic legacy offer the perfect setting for The Sleeping Beauty. The theatre blends tradition and innovation, making it ideal for bringing Nureyev’s refined choreography to life. Oscar-winning designer Franca Squarciapino created the stunning sets and costumes that evoke the opulence of Versailles. Under the baton of Kevin Rhodes, and performed by the acclaimed La Scala Ballet Company, this production offers an evening of visual poetry and precise dance – a must for ballet lovers and cultural travelers alike.

The story of The Sleeping Beauty follows the classic fairytale: At Princess Aurora’s christening, good fairies bestow gifts upon her – until the wicked fairy Carabosse curses her to prick her finger on her 16th birthday and die. The Lilac Fairy mitigates the curse: Aurora will sleep for 100 years until awakened by a prince’s kiss. Nureyev preserves Petipa’s classical choreography while adding dramatic depth, particularly to the Prince’s role, transforming him from a passive hero into an active protagonist. The ballet features a prologue and three acts filled with solos, pas de deux, courtly scenes, and the famous Rose Adagio. It remains a pinnacle of classical ballet, demanding the highest levels of technique, expression, and elegance. In Nureyev’s version, purity meets passion – a homage to ballet’s golden age and a feast for eyes and heart.
