Every year the season in Milan starts on 7th December, Saint’Ambrosius Day. The season premiere is a highlight for Milan as the opera will be live on TV and transmitted to the world.
The opera Tosca in 3 acts is in Italian. The lyrics will be displayed in English or Italian synchronized with the music. The performance takes 2 hours and 25 minutes including a break. During the break you will be able to enjoy a Spumante in the exclusive Toscanini Foyer.
Story
The opera takes place during the war in 1800 in Rome. The story is fictitious but based on historical events of the war in the Roman church-state.
The Roman consul Cesare Angelotti was imprisoned in Castel Sant’Angelo. Thanks to the help of his friend Cavaradossi he was able to escape and he found shelter in the Villa Cavaradossis. However, Tosca, Cavaradossi’s lover, became jealous. The police chief Baron Scarpia let the search for Cesare Angelotti. He tortured his friend Cavaradossi. But he did not want to betray his friend Cesare Angelotti. Under this pressure, Tosca collapses and reveals the hiding place of Angelotti, who commits suicide.
To save her lover, Tosca sells herself to the police chief Scarpia. When Scarpia signed the escort letter for Cavaradossi, Tosca stabs the police chief Scarpia to flee with Cavaradossi. However, the opera ends tragically for all actors: Cavaradossi, who was to be executed only for the sake of appearances, was shot. Appalled, Tosca realized that Sciarpa had betrayed her. In the meantime, the stabbed Sciarpa had been found, whereupon Tosca plunges from Castel Sant’Angelo
