Italian composer Umberto Giordano composed the opera drama. The libretto for Andrea Chénier was written by Luigi Illica. Andrea Chénier premiered at Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1896.
Set in the time of the French Revolution, the dramatic opera is about the French poet Andrea Chénier, who was sentenced to death by the guillotine at the age of 31 and died in Paris in 1794.
