Opera: Tosca

by Giacomo Puccini
Teatro Regio, Turin 2026-06-12 ... 2026-06-21

The Teatro Regio Turin concludes its 2025/2026 season with one of the most popular and frequently performed works in the operatic repertoire: Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca,” a melodrama in three acts, running from June 12 to 21, 2026. Premiered on January 14, 1900, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, this opera has captivated audiences ever since. This is not only due to its three memorable arias – “Recondita armonia,” “Vissi d’arte,” and “E lucevan le stelle” – but also because Puccini and his trusted librettists, Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, masterfully transferred the suspense, relentless rhythm, and plot twists of Victorien Sardou’s original drama “La Tosca” into a perfect theatrical mechanism. It’s a historical thriller set in Rome in 1800 under a “papal king” fearful of revolutionary winds, showcasing the ferocity of the papal police in suppressing Bonapartists and anyone collaborating with them.

The staging marks the highly anticipated return of Stefano Poda to the Teatro Regio. Following the success of his “La Juive” production, which won the 2023 “Abbiati” award for Best Production, Poda (who is responsible for direction, sets, costumes, choreography, and lighting) promises a new production of “Tosca” with his unmistakable visionary aesthetic and symbolic power. His signature style guarantees a visually stunning and profound experience.

The musical direction for this season’s finale is in the hands of Teatro Regio’s Music Director, Andrea Battistoni. His leadership promises a highly emotional and suspenseful performance that fully brings out the passionate score of Puccini. The inquisitorial cruelty of Baron Scarpia, a role that has earned international triumphs for baritone Roberto Frontali, stands in sharp contrast to the idealistic passion of Mario Cavaradossi, voiced by Martin Muehle. At the heart of the drama is Chiara Isotton as Floria Tosca, who finds herself caught in a situation larger than herself and gradually assumes the stature of a tragic heroine.

“Tosca” is an opera where “everything is red: the blood, the jealousy, the desire, the violence of power” – a gripping conclusion to a season filled with unforgettable musical events.

Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca,” premiered on January 14, 1900, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, is a masterpiece of Verismo and one of the most famous and beloved operas. It is based on the drama “La Tosca” by Victorien Sardou, which he wrote for the celebrated actress Sarah Bernhardt. Puccini was fascinated by the intense drama, psychological depth, and historical setting of the play, transforming it into a musical thriller that continues to captivate audiences today.

The opera is set in historical Rome https://www.urlaub-rom.de/ in 1800, when the city was under the control of the Papal States, and revolutionary ideas were simmering after the French occupation. This historical context, with the threat of Napoleonic troops and the brutal reaction of the papal police, forms a dark and tense backdrop for the personal drama of the three main characters: the famous singer Floria Tosca, her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, and the sadistic police chief Baron Scarpia.

“Tosca” is known for its fast-paced plot, haunting melodies, and masterful orchestration that reflects the characters’ psychological states. Each of the three acts culminates in an unforgettable musical highlight: Cavaradossi’s “Recondita armonia” in the first act, Tosca’s touching “Vissi d’arte” in the second act, and Cavaradossi’s farewell aria “E lucevan le stelle” in the third act. These arias are not only beautiful but also serve the dramatic development, revealing the deepest emotions of the characters.

Puccini succeeded in integrating political intrigue, ill-fated love, and brutal power dynamics into a seamless musical fabric. The opera is a prime example of Verismo, which aims to portray realistic and often violent stories with intense musical passion. Scarpia’s “inquisitorial cruelty,” Cavaradossi’s “idealistic passion,” and Tosca’s transformation from a jealous lover into a tragic heroine make “Tosca” a timeless drama of love, betrayal, power, and sacrifice that emotionally grips and enthralls the audience until the very end.
