JUDITHA TRIUMPHANS | Teatro Regio Turin • February 10, 2027
Vivaldi's only surviving oratorio is a "sacred military spectacle" full of instrumental splendor and vocal ecstasy. Experience the story of Judith in a concert performance.

Though conceived as an oratorio for concert performance, Juditha triumphans (1716) showcases the full extent of Vivaldi’s theatrical genius. The work was written as an allegory for Venice’s victory over the Turks, with the biblical heroine Judith representing the Republic. Originally composed for the exceptionally talented female musicians of the Ospedale della Pietà, Vivaldi cast all roles—including the male characters—for female voices. The result is a score of extraordinary instrumental color and vocal virtuosity. In Turin, the city that preserves nearly all of Vivaldi’s original manuscripts, Baroque specialist Gianluca Capuano returns to lead this magnificent masterpiece.
Background and Plot
Part 1: The city of Bethulia is under siege by the Assyrian army led by General Holofernes. The situation is dire. Judith, a beautiful Jewish widow, resolves to save her people. she enters the enemy camp to seduce Holofernes, who is immediately captivated by her beauty and invites her to a grand banquet.
Part 2: After the feast, a drunken Holofernes falls into a deep sleep. Judith seizes the moment: she draws his sword and beheads him. Carrying the tyrant’s head, she returns triumphantly to Bethulia. The Assyrians flee in panic, and the city is saved. Vivaldi highlights this triumph with an imaginative score, featuring rare instruments (such as the viola d’amore and chalumeaux) and martial brilliance.
