SALOME | Teatro Regio Turin • April 06, 2027
Sin, seduction, and a historical scandal: Experience Strauss' brilliant adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s drama in a surrealist production conducted by Axel Kober.

Just one year after its scandalous 1905 world premiere in Dresden, Richard Strauss himself conducted the first performance of Salome outside the German-speaking world right here at the Teatro Regio. 120 years later, this masterpiece returns in a striking, surrealist production by acclaimed film and opera director Kornél Mundruczó, who resets the action in the Trump era. Strauss immerses Oscar Wilde’s decadent drama of innocence and perversion into a revolutionary sonic architecture. Conducted by Axel Kober, the stellar cast features Johanni van Oostrum in the demanding title role, alongside John Daszak, Jennifer Larmore, and Gábor Bretz. A hypnotic vortex of Jugendstil lyricism, daring dissonances, and the famous Dance of the Seven Veils.
Plot of Salome
The Obsession: On the terrace of Herod’s palace, the young princess Salome becomes transfixed by the voice of the imprisoned prophet Jochanaan (John the Baptist). She commands the guards to release him from the cistern and attempts to seduce him, but the prophet fiercely rejects and curses her.
The Promise: Tetrarch Herod, consumed by lust for his stepdaughter, begs Salome to dance for him. In return, he swears an oath to grant her anything she desires—even half his kingdom. Salome agrees and performs the hypnotic Dance of the Seven Veils.
The Demand: Following the dance, Salome relentlessly demands her prize: the head of Jochanaan on a silver platter. Horrified, Herod offers various alternatives, but she refuses to back down. The prophet is executed. In an ecstatic, hallucinatory finale, Salome kisses the cold lips of the severed head, prompting a disgusted Herod to order his soldiers to crush her to death.
