Medieval tones meet dark sensuality: With "Edgar," the young Puccini created a powerful sonic mosaic of passion and betrayal. Experience the rare original version under Carlo Rizzi.

Edgar is an opera of “firsts”: Puccini’s first large-scale libretto and his only work featuring a medieval, chivalric setting. Most striking is the character of Tigrana—a “virago” of such ferocity that Puccini would only encounter her equal at the end of his career with Turandot. While Edgar is typically performed in a revised, shorter version, the Teatro Regio presents the original four-act version. In this new staging by Nicola Raab, co-produced with the Opéra de Nice, the story is reset at the beginning of the 20th century. Conducted by Carlo Rizzi, the production stars Luciano Ganci as Edgar, Elmira Hasan as Tigrana, and Barno Ismatullaeva as the angelic Fidelia.
Plot of Edgar
The Conflict: Young Edgar is torn between two women: the innocent Fidelia and the provocative Tigrana. In a fit of rage, Edgar burns down his family home and flees with Tigrana to live a life of excess and sin.
The Turn: Soon, Edgar regrets his choice, longing for Fidelia and his lost honor. He joins the army to seek redemption. In battle, he is reportedly killed.
The Finale: At his own funeral, Edgar appears disguised as a monk to reveal Tigrana’s true nature. Just as he reunites with Fidelia, a vengeful Tigrana stabs her rival. Edgar is left in despair over the body of his true love.
