CARMEN | Teatro Regio Turin • May 15, 2027
Love is a rebellious bird: Experience the absolute freedom and tragic fate of opera’s most famous heroine in a star-studded production conducted by Daniel Oren.

Carmen is the name of that elemental force that sweeps away perfectly ordered plans, rules, and habits, embodying eros in its irresistible and absolute freedom. “Free was I born, and free shall I die,” says the woman who defines this opera. Though poorly received at its 1875 premiere, Bizet’s masterpiece quickly won the admiration of minds like Nietzsche, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky. This top-class production at the Teatro Regio features the highly anticipated house debut of Evgeniya Kataeva as Carmen, alongside Piero Pretti as Don José, Erwin Schrott as the charismatic bullfighter Escamillo, and Ekaterina Bakanova as Micaëla. Conducted by the experienced hand of Daniel Oren and directed by Arnaud Bernard, this production promises a thrilling performance of what is often called “the opera par excellence.”
Plot of Carmen
Acts 1 & 2: Outside a cigarette factory in Seville, the fierce gypsy Carmen captivates every man she meets. Only the duty-bound soldier Don José ignores her—instantly sparking her interest. When Carmen is arrested after a fight, José falls under her spell, allows her to escape, and is sent to prison as a result. Upon his release, he deserts the army and joins Carmen and her smuggler friends in the mountains, ignoring the pleas of his childhood sweetheart Micaëla, who tries to lead him back to his dying mother.
Acts 3 & 4: José’s obsessive jealousy soon alienates Carmen, whose fickle love has already faded. Her heart now belongs to the glamorous bullfighter Escamillo. José temporarily leaves the smugglers but vows to return for her. The final, tragic showdown takes place outside the bullring in Seville: while the crowds inside cheer Escamillo’s victory, a desperate José confronts Carmen. When she proudly throws his ring in the dirt, declaring her independence, José stabs her to death in a fit of mad passion.
