EUGENE ONEGIN | Teatro Regio Turin • June 15, 2027
Alexander Pushkin’s poetic universe comes to life in Tchaikovsky’s "lyrical scenes." A deeply emotional exploration of missed opportunities, pride, and human fragility.

To close the season, Teatro Regio di Torino presents a crown jewel of the Russian repertoire: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Based on Alexander Pushkin’s celebrated novel in verse, the opera deliberately steps away from traditional theatrical effects to focus entirely on the powerful “inner drama” of its characters. At the heart of the story is the melancholic Tatyana, a character Tchaikovsky confessed to be deeply in love with while composing—her iconic Letter Scene remains a pinnacle of operatic expression. This acclaimed production is directed by the visionary Robert Carsen, whose clean, visually poetic staging perfectly mirrors the emotional isolation of the protagonists. Conductor Valentin Uryupin leads the orchestra.
Plot of Eugene Onegin
Act 1: On a quiet country estate, the romantic and bookish Tatyana lives a sheltered life. When the cynical, worldly dandy Eugene Onegin visits, she falls desperately in love with him. In a sleepless night, she pours her heart out in a passionate letter. The next day, Onegin coldly rejects her, lecturing her that he is not suited for marriage and values his freedom above all.
Act 2: Months later, at Tatyana’s nameday ball, a bored Onegin decides to flirt with Olga—Tatyana’s sister and the fiancée of his best friend, the poet Lensky. Deeply insulted, Lensky challenges Onegin to a duel. At dawn, tragedy strikes: Onegin shoots and kills his friend. Crushed by remorse, Onegin flees the country.
Act 3: Years later, Onegin returns to Saint Petersburg. At a society ball, he encounters Tatyana again—but she is no longer a naive country girl; she is now the elegant, dignified wife of the wealthy Prince Gremin. Overwhelmed by sudden passion, Onegin begs her to fly away with him. In a final, agonizing confrontation, Tatyana admits she still loves him but refuses to break her marital vows. She walks away, leaving Onegin shattered and utterly alone.
