Opera: Medea

by Luigi Cherubini
Teatro di San Carlo, Naples 2025-12-06 ... 2025-12-16

On December 6, 2025, the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples inaugurates its new opera season 2025/26 with Luigi Cherubini’s Medea. The San Carlo, the oldest continuously active opera house in Europe, continues its tradition of combining history with artistic innovation. Cherubini’s masterpiece, admired by Beethoven for its dramatic intensity and psychological depth, is a particularly powerful choice to open the season.

Under the baton of Riccardo Frizza and in a new staging by Mario Martone, the ancient tragedy of Medea is brought to life in a production that blends theatrical tension with expressive music. With soprano Sondra Radvanovsky as Medea and tenor Francesco Meli as Giasone, audiences can expect a performance of rare intensity and vocal brilliance.

The plot of Medea draws on the legendary ancient myth. Medea, a sorceress from Colchis, has sacrificed everything for her lover Giasone (Jason) – her homeland, her family, and her honor. Together they fled to Greece, but now Giasone betrays her to marry Glauce, the daughter of King Creon. Medea pleads in vain for mercy and the return of her children. Consumed by rage and despair, she swears a terrible revenge. She sends Glauce a poisoned gown, which kills her instantly. Finally, Medea commits the most horrifying act of all: she kills her own children to condemn Giasone to eternal torment. Cherubini’s music combines classical structure with fiery drama, creating one of the most radical and haunting female characters in the history of opera.
