The story is set in a picturesque village where the young, betrothed couple, Swanilda and Franz, live. Franz, however, becomes infatuated with a beautiful girl, Coppélia, who sits motionless on the balcony of the eccentric toymaker, Dr. Coppélius. This sparks intense jealousy in Swanilda. When Dr. Coppélius drops his key, Swanilda and her friends sneak into his house to confront her rival. Inside, they discover that Coppélia is merely a life-size doll, along with many other automatons.
Dr. Coppélius returns and chases the girls out, but Swanilda manages to hide and take Coppélia’s place. Meanwhile, Franz sneaks in, hoping to meet the beautiful girl. Coppélius catches him, drugs him, and attempts to transfer Franz’s life force into the doll using magic, believing he can bring Coppélia to life. Swanilda, disguised as the doll, tricks the old inventor, saves Franz, and reveals her identity. The two lovers reconcile and celebrate their wedding in the final act, with Dr. Coppélius being compensated for his damaged dolls.
