Mount Vesuvius, one of Europe’s most famous volcanoes, rises dramatically above the Bay of Naples. Located just a few kilometers from Naples, Pompeii, and Herculaneum, it attracts visitors who are drawn to its natural beauty, historical significance, and sweeping views. Vesuvius is still active, with its last eruption occurring less than 80 years ago. A hike to the crater offers a close look at the volcanic landscape and unforgettable panoramas over the Campanian coast. Today, the volcano is part of a protected national park, with well-maintained trails and exhibitions that explore the dramatic eruption of AD 79.

The Eruption of AD 79
The most devastating eruption occurred in AD 79, burying Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae. The Roman historian Pliny the Younger described a huge black cloud, earthquakes, and deadly gases. Pompeii was buried under 6 meters of ash, preserving it for future generations to witness a day frozen in time.
Fertile Soil and Living with Risk
Thanks to its volcanic soil, the region around Vesuvius is extremely fertile, allowing for three annual harvests. Wine is cultivated on its slopes, most famously the “Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio.” Despite the risk, thousands live at the volcano’s base, drawn by the landscape and agriculture.
Hiking and the Vesuvius National Park
Since 1995, the volcano has been part of the Vesuvius National Park. Visitors can drive or take a shuttle up to 1,000 meters, then hike the last 200 vertical meters to the crater rim (approx. 30–40 minutes walk). The view over Naples, the coastline, and the densely populated area below is simply breathtaking.
Ongoing Monitoring
Mount Vesuvius remains active and under constant surveillance due to its proximity to urban areas. The seismic activity across southern Italy, including Etna and Stromboli, reminds us of the underground forces shaping the region.
