The new 2025/2026 season opens in December 2025 with Dmitrij Šostakovič’s profound opera “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.” Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death, La Scala presents this gripping work, based on Nikolaj Leskov’s narrative. The opera tells the tragic story of a young woman in Tsarist Russia who resorts to drastic measures out of desperation and pays a heavy price. After its successful debut in Saint Petersburg, “Lady Macbeth” was intended to be the first part of a trilogy about the condition of women in Russia. However, its history is inextricably linked with censorship: a 1936 performance in Moscow led to Stalin’s notorious critique “Chaos Instead of Music” in Pravda, which branded the work and its composer. Maestro Riccardo Chailly conducts the original 1934 version, while Vasily Barkhatov makes his La Scala debut as director – a cast that, as always, promises greatness.
