1. Season Sensation: New Production of Bizet’s “Carmen” (Premiere: June 8)

With Georges Bizet’s masterpiece Carmen, the next Music Director of the Teatro alla Scala, Myung-Whun Chung, reaches his eleventh opera title at La Scala (having already conducted over 140 concerts both at home and on tour). Highly well-versed in French music—following his acclaimed tenure with the Opéra Bastille and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France—Chung leads a cast that is perfectly idiomatic.

This highly anticipated new production is a prestigious co-production with London’s Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Madrid’s Teatro Real:

• Carmen: Clémentine Margaine (alternating with Stéphanie d’Oustrac)
• Don José: Vittorio Grigolo, a major Italian voice with a strong affinity for the French repertoire (alternating with Matthew Polenzani)
• Escamillo: Giorgi Manoshvili
• Direction: Damiano Michieletto and set designer Paolo Fantin reduce local colour to a minimum. They construct a bare, powerful, and deeply effective spectacle focused entirely on the ineluctable fate of the protagonists.
