“L’Orontea” is an opera performed at La Scala in Milan as part of the project to rediscover the Italian origins of melodrama and the Baroque. The opera was composed by Antonio Cesti and had its premiere in Austria in 1656. Although she gained great popularity at the time, she later fell into obscurity.
In recent years, La Scala has staged two other operas of this type: Cavalli’s “La Calisto” and Vinci’s “Li zite ngalera”. It is now the turn of “L’Orontea” to delight the public once again with the rich artistic treasures of the Baroque period.
The new production is presented under the direction of Giovanni Antonini, a renowned specialist in baroque music. This production also marks the return of Robert Carsen to La Scala, having already enjoyed great success with his staging of Handel’s Julius Caesar.
Starring Stéphanie d’Oustrac, Mirco Palazzi, Francesca Pia Vitale and countertenor Carlo Vistoli in his debut. These talented performers will delight audiences with their performances, bringing to life the unique atmosphere and beauty of baroque opera.
“L’Orontea” promises a musical experience full of charm and seduction. The opera contains some rousing arias that were already popular in the 17th century.
Antonio Cesti’s work is brought back to life and given the recognition it deserves in Robert Carsen’s new production.
