L’amico Fritz from March 1st to March 12th, 2022
L’amico Fritz is the second opera by the composer Pietro Mascagni.
Nicola Daspuro wrote the libretto for the opera in three acts. The story is based on the novella L’ami Fritz by the French team of authors Erckmann-Chatrian.
L’amico Fritz was premiered in Rome in 1891. After the success of the Cavalleria Rusticana in 1890 at the Teatro Costanzo in Rome, L’amico Fritz was enthusiastically received by the audience.
The story takes place in Alsace, France, in the late 19th century.
The bachelor Fritz is a wealthy landowner who does not want to get married. But he gets to know the beautiful farmer’s daughter Suzel and his friend Rabbi David does his part to make Fritz fall in love. After complications and doubts, the love between Fritz and Suzel wins.
The cherry duo “duetto delle ciliegie” from the Suzel opera in the second act is the most famous scene in the opera. The opera ends with the common praise of love.
