The Opera Composer Gaetano Donizetti
Gaetano Donizetti, opera composer from Bergamo, is considered to be the inventor of Italian romantic music. A revolutionary in art and a brilliant creator of stories, he was ahead of his time and still delights us with his operas today. Gaetano Donizetti was born on November 29, 1797 in Bergamo to poor parents in a basement apartment. The house where he was born was in the Borgo Canale outside the Venetian city walls of Bergamo.
The opera composer Simon Mayr, who was then active as Kapellmeister in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore Bergamo, recognized Donizetti’s talent and supported the boy financially and musically. Simon Mayr is also referred to as Gaetano’s second father.
Donizetti has composed a large number of operas, but only a few have become major international successes, such as Anna Bolena, L’Elisir d’Amore and Lucia di Lammermoor, to name just the popular hits.
