“Jeanne Dark” unfolds as a heroicomic exploration of the legendary Maid of Orleans, Joan of Arc. Inspired by Voltaire’s satirical take on monarchy and Catholicism, Vacchi infuses the narrative with playful irreverence and incisive social commentary. The opera delves into Joan’s defiance against societal norms, particularly the subjugation of women and the hypocrisy of authority. Vacchi’s whimsical style mocks conventional aesthetic standards, challenging audiences to rethink ideological dogmas. Culminating not with Joan’s tragic demise but her daring escape atop a noble donkey, “Jeanne Dark” celebrates primal energy and rebellion against oppressive structures, offering a thought-provoking and entertaining experience.
