The Macerata Opera Festival takes place over five weekends from July 20 to August 19, 2023 at the open-air Arena Sferisterio in the small town of Macerata in the Marche region. The Arena Sferisterio is one of the most extraordinary theaters in the world. It was built in the 19th century as a sports stadium for an old ball sport where balls bounce off the wall. Hence the unusual shape. The high arched wall with the columns forms the stage. The arrangement creates a kind of resonance box and the spectators sit as if in an auricle. The open-air arena Sferisterio has exceptionally good acoustics, a treat for sensitive ears. The spectators are very close to the opera singers, with no barrier between the spectators and the stage.
