“Don Pasquale” is a popular comedy by Gaetano Donizetti , performed by many opera houses around the world. Davide Livermore’s staging at La Scala in Milan offers a unique interpretation of the work that blends the timeless story with modern elements. The combination of Livermore’s staging, the musical direction of Evelino Pidò and the talented singers promises an impressive performance of “Don Pasquale” at La Scala in Milan.
This production brings Donizetti’s bitter comedy into the melancholic atmosphere of Cinecittà’s black and white films. Livermore creates a grey, sometimes dark, sometimes pearly scenery that is contrasted with the colorful costumes by Gianluca Falaschi.
Livermore’s staging does not affect the immediacy and liveliness of the narrative. Instead, he adds subtle references to the history of Italian cinema to create a special atmosphere. A highlight of the production is Norina’s fantastic flight over the Roman countryside in an Alfa Giulietta, which the viewers will never forget.
The revival of “Don Pasquale” will be conducted by Evelino Pidò. The leading roles are embodied by renowned singers such as Ambrogio Maestri, Andrea Carroll, Lawrence Brownlee and Mattia Olivieri. With their musical and acting skills, they bring the characters and comedy of the opera to life.
