The world-famous architect Andrea Palladio left us a large number of mansion buildings that were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. On your trip, you will get to know about his life and these structures and visit some of the fantastic villas.
Asolo belongs to the “Borghi più belli d’Italia” and is beautifully situated in the Prosecco hills north of Treviso and is considered the pearl of Treviso. From the ruins of the Rocca tower you have an almost infinite view, which earned Asolo the title “City of a Hundred Horizons”. With good visibility, you can watch over the Euganean Hills to Venice. In the central Piazza Garibaldi with the beautiful fountain is the cathedral, where you can admire valuable works by Lorenzo Lotto and Jacopo Da Ponte. We recommend a visit to the Villa Freya, in whose beautiful garden the remains of a Roman theater can be found. The noblewoman Caterina Cornaro, the only Queen of Veneto, resided in the Castello della Regina.
You will be amazed by Treviso. Treviso is crisscrossed by canals and is also known as the city of waters. Within the well-preserved city walls, you can find frescoes on the buildings at all corners and ends. The 12th-century cathedral with its Romanesque crypt is particularly worth seeing. Here you can admire the Malinti Chapel with an altarpiece by Titian and frescoes by Pordenone.
The historic center is in Piazza dei Signori with the famous Palazzo dei Trecento and Palazzo Podestà. A stroll along the Cagnan Canal, with the beautiful palazzi on the banks and the frescoes, is particularly romantic. In between are beautiful places with historical fountains. The characteristic fish market is also located on a small island in the canal.
Prosecco wine is produced around Treviso and the “Trevigiano” radicchio is grown. It is here that the popular Italian dessert tiramisù is said to have been invented.
Vicenza is the city of Palladio with its numerous palazzi, a highlight for all lovers of architecture and the buildings of the Renaissance.
With the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Andrea Palladio built the first free-standing theater building in Europe after antiquity.
The most famous Renaissance buildings by Andrea Palladio are the Palazzo Barbaran da Porto, the Villa La Rotonda (Villa Almerico Capra Valmarana) and the Basilica Palladiana (Palazzo della Ragione). In 1994 Vicenza was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as the “City of Palladio”. A statue is dedicated to him in Vicenza.
UNESCO World Heritage: City of Vicenza and Palladian Villas of the Veneto
In the center in Piazza dei Signori is the Basilica Palladiana. It is not a basilica in the classical sense, but was constructed according to the ancient model as a market hall and courthouse with large arches. The building in Piazza dei Signori is dominated by the almost 80 m high tower Torre di Piazza from the 12th century.
In the center of the Veneto region are the charming towns of Bassano del Grappa, Marostica and Castelfranco Veneto. The well-preserved massive city walls are characteristic for these towns.
Bassano del Grappa is located on the banks of the Brenta River and is famous for the distillation of the world-famous Grappa. Like the entire region, you will find the architecture of Andrea Palladio in the historic center.
Marostica is located on the slopes of the Asiago plateau. The central square in the center, Piazza degli Scacchi, is decorated with chess fields. Every two years, the live chess game with actors in medieval costumes takes place here in the open air. The city wall with the battlements surrounds the city with the lower Castel and extends through the landscape to the upper Castel.
The fertile area around Marostica is known for the cultivation of cherries (Ciliegia di Marostica)
Castelfranco Veneto
The historic center of Castelfranco Veneto is also enclosed by thick walls. The famous painter Giorgione was born here, whose paintings can be admired in the cathedral. In the Casa Giorgione Museum in Casa Marta-Pellizzari there is a mysterious wall frieze.
