Monteverdi Festival 2023 – Music and Culture Trip 7 Days
The journey to the Monteverdi Festival 2023 follows in the footsteps of the composer Claudio Monteverdi from his place of death in Venice, via Mantua , where the “divine” Claudio lived at the court of the Gonzaga family, to his birthplace Cremona , where the famous violins are made. The journey ends in Milan, where Monteverdi’s operas are part of the permanent repertoire of the Teatro alla Scala.

A very special journey in the footsteps of Italian opera history with outstanding musical highlights. At the opening of the 40th Monteverdi Festival you will see the opera “Incoronazione di Poppea” in the Teatro Ponchielli.
In the auditorium of the Stradivari Museum, a true marvel of acoustics, experience a concert on a valuable historical violin.You will travel in an international group and will be accompanied by a guide who speaks English, French and Italian. For the guided visits in Venice, Mantua and Cremona German-speaking tour guides are employed.
Monteverdi Travel Program from June 13th to 19th, 2023
The Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi was a pioneer of Italian opera. He was born in Cremona in 1567 and died in Venice in 1643. L’Orfeo is considered the first opera ever.
Tuesday June 13th – Venice
Individual arrival in Venice. On request we can organize your arrival by train or plane and private transfers.
Overnight in the 4 star-hotel KETTE in Venice.
Wednesday June 14 – Venice
Breakfast in the hotel
Free time in the morning to stroll through the wonderful city in the lagoon.
3:00 p.m. Meet your guide for a guided tour of Venice focusing on the extraordinary musical history of Venice and the Teatro la Fenice and the work of Claudio Monteverdi.
The evening is at leisure.

Thursday June 15 – Venice Boat Trip to Mantova
Breakfast in the hotel
You will spend this day on a ship rented exclusively for your travel group. You drive along the Piazza San Marco through the Canal Grande and on to Chioggia, the Little Venice. The beautiful fishing town of Chioggia
was the scene of Carlo Goldoni’s comedy “Baruffe”.
Lunch will then be served on your ship: fresh fish dishes based on typical Venetian recipes through to dessert.
Another highlight of the navigation is the nature reserve of the Po Delta, where a lot of birds have their breeding grounds.
The complex hydraulic system of the locks, which still enables shipping to the canals to this day, is as exciting as it is today.
In the afternoon you will arrive in TAGLIO DEL PO, where a bus will be waiting for you to take you to Mantua. In the pretty city of Mantua you will be welcomed by your guide, who will show you the most beautiful sights during a guided city walk. The walk ends with a visit to the famous Ducal Palace (Palazzo di Gonzaga) and a visit to Monteverdi Square.
Typical specialties from Mantua will be served for dinner together.
Overnight at the Grand Hotel San Lorenzo in the city center.
Friday 16 June – Mantova – Cremona – Opera Night

After breakfast you will visit the Palazzo Te, an incomparable masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance.
The Te Palace also belonged to the noble Gonzaga family as a sumptuous suburban villa and for lavish celebrations.
You take the bus to Cremona and in between you have lunch in a typical “Osteria”.
After lunch, embark again on a boat for a mini-cruise on the canal through a charming landscape of outstanding ecological interest.
Upon arrival in Cremona, you will meet the representatives of the historical Ponchielli Theater.
You are now in the town of Claudio Monteverdi, which hosts the Monteverdi Festival.
Check-in at Hotel Impero
In the evening you are invited to the Ponchielli Theater for the opening night of the Monteverdi Festival with the performance of the opera “L’incoronazione di Poppea” to the music of Claudio Monteverdi.
At the end of the performance, return to Hotel Impero for overnight stay.
Saturday June 17 – Cremona – Concert Evening

After breakfast you will get to know the historic old town of Cremona, the city of the famous violin maker Stradivari, on a guided tour.
You will visit one of the most beautiful squares in Italy as well as the cathedral square with the cathedral, the so-called “Sistine Chapel of the Po Valley” with its wonderful picture cycle from the 16th century. The Torrazzo bell tower, at 112 meters high, is the highest brick bell tower in Europe and you can climb it and admire Cremona from above.
You will visit the beautiful interactive Museo del Violino, which is one of the most interesting violin museums in the world and houses a unique collection of Stradivarius violins.
At the end of the tour, a small concert will be played on one of the historical instruments from the collection.
Lunch in the restaurant with a typical Cremonese menu.
The afternoon is free for strolling with the possibility of further sightseeing.
8:15 p.m. Meeting at the Arvedi Auditorium, Violin Museum. The earpiece-shaped auditorium is one of the acoustic wonders of the world.

Sunday June 18 – Cremona Private Transfer to Milan
Breakfast in the hotel
After that, meet your guide for a visit to the Palazzo Affaitati, an elegant 16th-century palace that houses the Ala Ponzone Museum.
The heart of the museum is a picture gallery with more than 2000 works ranging from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. It houses many masterpieces, including the famous “Saint Francis in Meditation” by Caravaggio or the emblematic “Ortolan” by Francesco Arcimboldo.
After the visit, you will say goodbye to the enchanting music city of Cremona.
A private transfer will take you to the 4-star Hotel Cavour in Milan, not far from La Scala.
The afternoon is free. Visits and entrance fees (such as the La Scala Museum) on request.
