The Story of L’esule di Roma
Set in ancient Rome, the opera tells the moving story of Settimio, who has been unjustly exiled. Despite the risk of a death sentence, he returns in secret to see his beloved, Argelia. The heart of the drama lies in the inner conflict of her father, Senator Murena, who once betrayed Settimio with a false accusation. Donizetti created a score of profound psychological depth, highlighted by Murena’s famous hallucination scene and the emotional trio in the second act. The work concludes—untypically for many tragedies of the period—with the hero’s pardon and the moral redemption of the traitor.
The Artists, Cast and Creative Team
For this new production at the Donizetti Opera Festival 2026, internationally renowned specialists in the Bel Canto repertoire are expected. Under the artistic vision of Francesco Micheli and the musical direction of the celebrated conductor Riccardo Frizza (Music Director of the Festival), a critical historical edition will be presented. The performance features the Orchestra Donizetti Opera, accompanied by the Donizetti Opera Chorus. The high-caliber cast for the roles of Argelia, Settimio, and Murena guarantees a world-class vocal interpretation that meets the technical brilliance of Donizetti’s score at every turn.
