by Alban Berg
Teatro la Fenice 2025-10-17 ... 2025-10-26

Immerse yourself in the gripping psychological drama of Wozzeck, Alban Berg’s groundbreaking opera, as it takes center stage at the illustrious Teatro La Fenice in Venice from 17th to 26th October 2025 Wozzeck is a masterpiece of 20th-century music, renowned for its innovative use of atonality and expressionism to explore the depths of human despair and societal alienation.
Berg’s powerful score, with its haunting orchestration and unsettling dissonances, perfectly captures the turmoil of Wozzeck’s mind and the bleakness of his existence, making it one of the most intense and emotionally charged operas ever composed.

Wozzeck premiered on December 14, 1925, at the Berlin State Opera, conducted by Erich Kleiber, marking a pivotal moment in the history of 20th-century opera. Alban Berg’s adaptation of Georg Büchner’s play brought a new level of psychological depth and musical innovation to the operatic stage.
Despite its challenging musical language, Wozzeck quickly gained recognition as a masterpiece, influencing subsequent generations of composers and solidifying Berg’s reputation as a leading figure in modern music.

Venice, the city built on water. Blessed with a historic opera house, the Teatro La Fenice, the most famous and renowned landmark in the history of Italian theatre. It was lost to fire 3 times, and always rebuilt. Hence the name La Fenice, the Phoenix, the bird rising from the ashes.
The Teatro La Fenice, one of the most iconic opera houses in the world, offers the perfect backdrop for this intense and challenging work. Located in the heart of Venice, La Fenice has been a cradle of operatic innovation since its founding in 1792. The theater has hosted the premieres of numerous masterpieces and continues to be a beacon of cultural excellence. Its name, meaning “The Phoenix,” symbolizes its resilience, having risen from the ashes after devastating fires, most recently in 1996. Today, La Fenice stands as a testament to Venice’s enduring artistic spirit, providing a venue where history, tradition, and avant-garde performance intersect.

Based on the unfinished play by Georg Büchner, the opera delves into the harrowing story of Franz Wozzeck, a lowly soldier subjected to inhumane experiments and relentless humiliation, who ultimately spirals into madness and violence.
The opera, structured in three acts, consists of 15 scenes that depict the life and downfall of the soldier Wozzeck, who is driven to murder and insanity by the oppressive forces of society.

Berg’s use of atonal music, including complex leitmotifs and innovative orchestration, was revolutionary, breaking away from traditional harmonic structures to reflect the disordered inner world of the protagonist.

Berg’s opera Wozzeck was one of the first operas to fully embrace the principles of expressionism, an art movement that sought to depict the emotional and psychological experiences of individuals rather than objective reality.

The opera’s stark portrayal of the brutality of life and the dehumanizing effects of poverty and power resonated with audiences in the tumultuous years following World War I.

This production of Wozzeck at La Fenice is under the expert direction of Valentino Villa, with the La Fenice Orchestra and Choir led by the esteemed conductor Markus Stenz. The innovative set designs by Massimo Checchetto and costumes by Elena Cicorella promise to create a visually striking atmosphere that complements Berg’s complex score. Featuring a talented cast, including Roberto de Candia in the title role and Lidia Fridman as Marie, this production is poised to deliver an unforgettable operatic experience.
