In Seville, the naive soldier Don José is captivated by the fiercely independent gypsy Carmen, who sings of the untamable nature of love. When Carmen is arrested for attacking a fellow worker, she seduces José into letting her escape, leading to his own imprisonment. Months later, a deeply infatuated José deserts the army to join Carmen and her smuggler friends in the mountains, ignoring the pleas of his faithful childhood sweetheart, Micaëla. However, Carmen’s volatile affection quickly fades as she becomes infatuated with the glamorous, heroic bullfighter Escamillo. Obsessed and consumed by burning jealousy, José follows Carmen back to Seville. Outside the bullring, while the crowd cheers for Escamillo, José corners Carmen and desperately begs her to return to him. When she proudly throws his ring in the dirt, a desperate José stabs her to death.
