In 1730s Paris, the famous actress Adriana Lecouvreur is deeply in love with Maurizio, the Count of Saxony, whom she believes is a simple military officer. Her rival is the powerful Princess of Bouillon, who is also secretly enamored with Maurizio. When Adriana discovers Maurizio’s true royal identity, she promises to help him secure his political ambitions. However, during a grand soirée, the tension between the two women erupts when Adriana publicly insults the Princess by reciting a scathing monologue from Racine’s Phèdre. Driven by furious jealousy and seeking total vengeance, the Princess later sends Adriana a velvet box containing a bouquet of poisoned violets. Believing they are a farewell token from Maurizio, Adriana inhales their deadly scent and tragically dies in the arms of the devastated Maurizio and her loyal friend Michonnet.
