Teatro la Fenice 2026-04-12 ... 2026-04-26

In April 2026, Teatro La Fenice in Venice will present a spectacular new production of Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin. From April 12 to 26, the romantic opera will be reimagined under the stage direction of Damiano Michieletto and conducted by Markus Stenz. This is a major international co-production with Fondazione Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia.

The stellar cast includes Brian Jagde as the mysterious knight Lohengrin, Chiara Mogini as the powerful Ortrud, and Claudio Otelli as Telramund. Andrea Silvestrelli takes the role of King Heinrich, and Äneas Humm sings the King’s Herald. The chorus and orchestra of Teatro La Fenice are under the preparation of Alfonso Caiani.

Lohengrin remains one of Wagner’s most captivating works, blending legend, politics, and psychological drama into a timeless masterpiece. This new staging offers a bold visual interpretation, while remaining faithful to Wagner’s powerful musical vision. Opera lovers and Wagner enthusiasts alike will not want to miss this highlight of Venice’s 2026 opera season.

Venice, the city built on water. Blessed with a historic opera house, the Teatro La Fenice, the most famous and renowned landmark in the history of Italian theatre. It was lost to fire 3 times, and always rebuilt. Hence the name La Fenice, the Phoenix, the bird rising from the ashes.
Venice is a very unique place in the world. It is so different and beautiful that it is hard to grasp unless you have been and felt it. First-time visitors are best advised to arrive well prepared and guided.

Lohengrin is set in medieval Brabant, where Elsa is accused of murdering her brother, the rightful heir. In despair, she prays for divine help—only to be saved by a mysterious knight who arrives in a boat pulled by a swan. He offers to defend her on one condition: she must never ask his name or origin.

After defeating her accuser, Friedrich von Telramund, the knight marries Elsa. But Telramund’s wife, the manipulative Ortrud, plants seeds of doubt in Elsa’s mind. On their wedding night, Elsa breaks her vow and asks the forbidden question.

The knight reveals his true identity: Lohengrin , a guardian of the Holy Grail, whose power depends on anonymity. Bound by duty, he must now leave her. Before departing, he miraculously returns Elsa’s brother, proving her innocence.

The opera ends in sorrow, exploring themes of faith, betrayal, and the tragic cost of forbidden knowledge. Wagner’s Lohengrin is a timeless story of love lost to human weakness.
