Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito opens the 2025/26 opera season at Teatro La Fenice in Venice with an elegant and powerful production. Story of La clemenza di Tito by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Set in ancient Rome, La clemenza di Tito tells a story of betrayal, ambition, and forgiveness. Vitellia, the daughter of a deposed emperor, is furious that Emperor Tito has chosen to marry another. She persuades Sesto, her admirer and Tito’s closest friend, to assassinate him.
Torn between his love for Vitellia and loyalty to Tito, Sesto agrees and sets fire to the Capitol. Tito survives and is heartbroken by Sesto’s betrayal. Despite everything, he chooses mercy over vengeance and pardons Sesto.
Overcome with guilt, Vitellia confesses her role in the plot. Remarkably, Tito also forgives her—demonstrating the moral strength and compassion that give the opera its name: The Clemency of Titus.
Mozart’s opera explores themes of justice, love, duty, and redemption. With emotional nuance and elegant music, it delivers a timeless message about leadership and humanity in the face of treachery.
