IL TROVATORE | Teatro del Maggio • February 23, 2027
Verdi's thrilling masterpiece unites love, revenge and destiny in one of opera's most dramatic stories, filled with magnificent choruses and unforgettable arias.

With Il trovatore, Giuseppe Verdi created one of the most powerful and passionate operas of the nineteenth century. Premiered in Rome in 1853, the work combines unforgettable melodies with a gripping story of love, revenge and long-hidden family secrets. Together with Rigoletto and La traviata, it forms Verdi’s celebrated “popular trilogy”. The Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino presents a new production conducted by Music Director Daniele Gatti and staged by Leo Muscato, offering a fresh interpretation that highlights the youthful spirit and emotional intensity of Verdi’s unforgettable characters.
The Plot of Il Trovatore
Amid the civil war in fifteenth-century Spain, Count di Luna and the troubadour Manrico are bitter rivals, both in battle and for the love of Leonora. Manrico is raised by the gypsy Azucena, who seeks revenge after her mother was burned at the stake by the Count’s father. Haunted by a terrible mistake from the past, Azucena has unknowingly raised the wrong child. As love, jealousy and vengeance collide, Manrico is captured and sentenced to death. Leonora sacrifices herself in a desperate attempt to save him, but the Count discovers her deception too late. Only after Manrico’s execution does Azucena reveal the devastating truth: the man he has killed is his own brother.
