Opera: La Traviata

by Giuseppe Verdi
Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Florence 2027-01-15 ... 2027-01-22

Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata is one of the most beloved operas ever written and a masterpiece of Italian Romanticism. Inspired by Alexandre Dumas fils’ La Dame aux Camélias, it tells the moving story of the courtesan Violetta Valéry, whose search for love and dignity is ultimately crushed by the conventions of society.
First performed in Venice in 1853, the opera combines unforgettable melodies with extraordinary psychological depth, making it one of the most frequently performed works in the operatic repertoire. The Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino presents Verdi’s timeless masterpiece in its own acclaimed production, conducted by Alessandro Bonato and directed by Stefania Grazioli.

Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry falls deeply in love with the young Alfredo Germont and abandons her glamorous life to live with him in the countryside. Their happiness is shattered when Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, persuades Violetta to leave his son in order to protect the family’s honour and his daughter’s future marriage. Secretly sacrificing her own happiness, Violetta returns to Paris, where Alfredo, unaware of the truth, publicly humiliates her. Only after learning of her selfless decision does he seek forgiveness. Gravely ill with tuberculosis, Violetta is reunited with Alfredo, but their happiness comes too late. She dies in his arms, redeemed by love but defeated by fate.
