The opera Il matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage) by Italian composer Domenico Cimarosa with a libretto by Giovanni Bertati will be performed at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice on Friday 10 February 2023. Domenico Cimarosa wrote the comic opera in two acts in 1792, based on the comedy The Clandestine Marriage by David Garrick.

The Story of IL MATRIMONIO SEGRETO
The opera is about the wealthy merchant Geronimo, who has two daughters whom he wants to marry off to noblemen in order to gain social recognition. What he doesn’t know is that his younger daughter Carolina is already secretly “married” to Paolino.
The traveler Count Robinsone is to be married to the older sister Elisetta, but falls in love with Caroline, which makes Elisetta jealous. Geronimo’s sister Fidalma is also in love, namely with young Paolino.
Caroline is to be sent to the convent
The game of secret love and jealousy, errors and confusion finally comes to a happy ending.
