Opera: Il Castello di Barbablù | La Voix Humaine

by Béla Bartók / Francis Poulenc
Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Florence
2026-03-14 ... 2026-03-22

In March 2026, from the 14th to the 22nd, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino invites you to a profound psychological evening of opera. The new double bill of Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle and Francis Poulenc’s La voix humaine promises an unforgettable journey into the hidden corners of the human soul. This unique combination of two 20th-century masterpieces, presented as a new production in co-production with the Tiroler Festspiele Erl, contrasts two radically different yet thematically related portraits of love, isolation, and despair. Directed by the internationally acclaimed Claus Guth , known for his insightful and visually powerful interpretations, this evening will dissolve the boundaries between the inner and outer worlds.

The first part is Bartók’s symbolist mystery, Bluebeard’s Castle. The opera transports the audience to a dark, medieval world where the young Judith seeks to uncover her husband’s secrets by opening seven forbidden doors. The score, rich in Hungarian folk elements and expressive harmonies, paints a soundscape of oppressive beauty.
The second part features Poulenc’s La voix humaine, an emotional tour de force for a single singer. Based on the play by Jean Cocteau, we witness a woman’s final, desperate phone call with her former lover. Under the baton of Martin Rajna and with a world-class cast, including Florian Boesch as Bluebeard and Anna Caterina Antonacci as “Elle,” this evening will be an intense confrontation with the abysses of love and loss.

This double bill explores the depths of human relationships and the torment of isolation across two acts.

Bluebeard’s Castle: The young Judith follows her new husband, the mysterious Duke Bluebeard, to his gloomy castle. Determined to bring light into the darkness and into his past, she insists he open the castle’s seven locked doors. Behind each door, a part of his realm and soul is revealed: a torture chamber, an armory, a treasury, a secret garden, and his vast domains. Yet, every location is stained with blood. The sixth door unveils a lake of tears. When Judith opens the seventh and final door, she does not find the murdered corpses of his former wives, but three living, richly attired women. They are the wives of the morning, noon, and evening. Judith, as the wife of the night, is adorned with jewels and must follow them into the room of memory, after which the door closes behind her forever, leaving Bluebeard alone in eternal darkness.

La voix humaine: A woman, referred to only as “Elle” (She), has one last telephone conversation with the lover who has left her. In a long, fragmented monologue, she goes through a rollercoaster of emotions. Her tone shifts from feigned calmness to desperate affection, from pleading to anger, from sweet reminiscences to lies and self-deception. We never hear her lover’s voice; we can only infer his answers from her reactions. The telephone cord becomes the only, fragile connection to her past happiness and, simultaneously, the umbilical cord that strangles her. Her emotional collapse culminates in a final, heartbreaking “I love you,” before the line—and the opera—abruptly ends.
