Richard Wagner’s opera The Flying Dutchman will be performed from June 22 to July 4, 2023 at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice. Richard Wagner composed the opera “Der fliegende Holländer” based on inspiration from a Heinrich Heine legend and his own experiences with stormy passages on ships. The Wagner opera The Flying Dutchman was also known as The Ghost Ship.

Venice, the city built on water. Blessed with a historic opera house, the Teatro La Fenice, the most famous and renowned landmark in the history of Italian theatre. It was lost to fire 3 times, and always rebuilt. Hence the name La Fenice, the Phoenix, the bird rising from the ashes.

The action takes place after the legend of the Flying Dutchman, the Dutch captain Bernard Fokke. The central motif of the opera is the longing for the eternal faithfulness of a beloved woman. The first version of the romantic work in three acts premiered in Dresden in 1843.
