On May 3, 2025, the 87th Festival del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino presents a profoundly moving performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, Op. 66, at the Teatro del Maggio. Under the baton of the talented Diego Ceretta , this monumental work will bring together soloists, a full choir, a children’s choir, the Orchestra del Maggio, and the Orchestra della Toscana in a powerful artistic collaboration. Composed in 1962 for the consecration of Coventry Cathedral, Britten’s War Requiem masterfully interweaves the traditional Latin Requiem text with the poignant war poetry of Wilfred Owen. The result is a deeply emotional reflection on the horrors of war and a plea for peace. With its dramatic contrasts, haunting melodies, and overwhelming intensity, this performance promises to be one of the most stirring moments of the festival.
