Attila premiered on March 17, 1846, at La Fenice in Venice, making it one of the composer’s earlier successes. The opera’s libretto, written by Temistocle Solera and later revised by Francesco Maria Piave, is based on the 1809 play Attila, König der Hunnen by Zacharias Werner.
Don’t miss the chance to experience this captivating opera in one of the world’s most enchanting cities. Venice, where the past and present meet in a celebration of art and culture. Attending Attila at La Fenice is not just a night at the opera; it’s an immersion into a world where music, history, and drama converge in an unforgettable atmosphere.

Venice, the city built on water. Blessed with a historic opera house, the Teatro La Fenice, the most famous and renowned landmark in the history of Italian theatre. It was lost to fire 3 times, and always rebuilt. Hence the name La Fenice, the Phoenix, the bird rising from the ashes.

Teatro La Fenice, one of the most storied opera houses in the world, provides the ideal setting for this dramatic tale. Established in 1792, La Fenice has been the stage for countless world premieres and legendary performances, making it a beacon of cultural excellence in the heart of Venice. The theater’s name, meaning “The Phoenix,” reflects its remarkable history of rebirth, having risen from the ashes after devastating fires. Today, La Fenice stands as a symbol of Venice’s enduring spirit, its opulent interior and superb acoustics offering an unparalleled operatic experience.

The opera tells the story of Attila the Hun, the legendary warrior king whose invasion of Italy strikes fear into the hearts of its people, and the fierce resistance he encounters from the determined heroine, Odabella, and her allies. Verdi’s score for Attila is a magnificent blend of martial vigor and lyrical beauty, featuring some of the most powerful choruses and arias in the operatic repertoire.

Set during the decline of the Roman Empire, Attila tells the story of the infamous Hun king and his encounter with the people of Italy, who resist his invasion. Verdi was inspired by the dramatic possibilities of this historical subject, and his music for Attila reflects the intensity and grandeur of the story.

The opera’s themes of freedom, resistance, and the clash of civilizations resonated deeply with Italian audiences at the time, especially in the context of the Risorgimento, the movement for Italian unification.

Under the direction of Leo Muscato, this production of Attila promises to be a powerful and visually striking interpretation of Verdi’s work. The La Fenice Orchestra and Choir, conducted by the talented Sebastiano Rolli, will bring Verdi’s dynamic score to life, while the evocative sets by Federica Parolini and costumes by Silvia Aymonino will transport audiences to a time of epic battles and heroic deeds. With a stellar cast led by Michele Pertusi as the formidable Attila and Anastasia Bartoli as the fearless Odabella, this production will capture the intensity and grandeur of Verdi’s vision.
The title role, with its commanding vocal lines, is a showcase for a bass-baritone of exceptional power and presence, while the role of Odabella demands both vocal agility and dramatic intensity from the soprano.
