Plot and History of "Zelmira"
“Zelmira” is set on the ancient island of Lesbos, where Zelmira, the daughter of King Polidoro, becomes embroiled in a dangerous plot after her father’s throne is seized by the usurper Azor. To protect her son and the king, she hides Polidoro in a secret cave, but she is accused of treason and murder. The return of her husband, Ilo, and the intervention of his friend, Antenore, bring hope, but the path to justice is fraught with twists. The opera reflects Rossini’s mature style, emphasizing dramatic expression and elaborate vocal lines. Since its premiere in Naples in 1822, “Zelmira” has been admired for its complexity but remains less frequently performed due to the challenges it poses to singers and musicians. Its revival at the Rossini Opera Festival continues the festival’s tradition of presenting Rossini’s lesser-known works, giving audiences the opportunity to experience this unique operatic treasure.
