Experience a night of Rossini’s brilliance at the Rossini Opera Festival 2025, combining the composer’s musical versatility in “Soirées musicales” and his early comic opera “La cambiale di matrimonio”. “Soirées musicales” comprises twelve lyrical songs for voice and piano, composed between 1830 and 1835, reflecting Rossini’s shift from theater to concert music after his last opera, “Guillaume Tell”.
“La cambiale di matrimonio”, a one-act comic opera set in the house of merchant Tobia Mill, follows the lively plot of a marriage deal and unexpected love. This performance offers a unique glimpse into both the lighter and more introspective sides of Rossini’s genius.

The Story of La cambiale di matrimonio
Rossini’s one-act comic opera, “La cambiale di matrimonio,” unfolds around a humorous, unexpected marriage arrangement. Slook, a wealthy American businessman, sends a peculiar request to his British partner, Tobia Mill, asking him to “procure” a wife. Mill decides that his own daughter, Fanny, would suit Slook’s request. However, Fanny is in love with the handsome yet poor Edoardo, whom Mill deems unsuitable as a match. When Slook arrives, Fanny learns of the plan and reacts fiercely, refusing to be married off.
Mill’s employee, Norton, intervenes by warning Slook that his “purchase” (i.e., his intended bride, Fanny) is already “spoken for.” Slook attempts to cancel the arrangement, but Mill instead challenges him to a duel. Once Slook realizes that Fanny and Edoardo truly love each other, he has a change of heart. Not only does he transfer the marriage contract to Edoardo, but he also names him his heir. Moved by Slook’s generosity, Mill ultimately consents to Fanny’s marriage to Edoardo. The opera concludes in a celebratory spirit, as Slook departs for America with joy and good wishes all around.
