Witness the work that instantly made the young Verdi an Italian national hero and launched his meteoric rise: “Nabucodonosor” (Nabucco) takes the spotlight at the XXVI Festival Verdi 2026 at the venerable Teatro Regio di Parma. From October 3 to 24, 2026, this opera, which, more than any other, embodies the themes of oppression, faith, and the yearning for distant worlds (the return home), will be celebrated in a spectacular new production. Verdi’s third work is a passionate ode to freedom and a masterpiece of the Italian Risorgimento.

Nabucco (premiered in 1842) transports the audience to ancient Babylon and Jerusalem – a historical setting that masterfully illustrates the festival theme “Mondi Lontani” (Distant Worlds). The plot depicts the conflict between the Hebrews and the Babylonian King Nabucodonosor (Nebuchadnezzar), who conquers Jerusalem and forces the Jews into exile. The opera is a captivating story of hubris, power, madness, divine punishment, and ultimate redemption. King Nabucodonosor succumbs to megalomania, proclaims himself a god, is subsequently driven mad, and must be overthrown by his own followers. The true power struggles, however, unfold within the palace, where the supposed daughter Abigaille attempts to seize power by overthrowing her stepfather and betraying her sister Fenena.

The chorus of the third act, “Va, pensiero, sull’ali dorate” (Fly, thought, on golden wings), the moving song of the Hebrew slaves longing for their lost homeland, became an immortal symbol for Italian unity and the yearning for freedom. Musically, Nabucco is characterized by its elemental force, its haunting choral scenes, and its characteristic, dramatic conflicts. The performance of the critical edition guarantees a musically authentic and profound experience.

The staging for the Verdi Festival 2026 is an event of historical significance: the direction, sets, costumes, and lighting are all handled by the legendary Italian maestro Pier Luigi Pizzi, whose unique and often minimalist aesthetic promises a new, deeply psychological perspective on this early drama. Francesco Lanzillotta conducts the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, bringing out the force and early melodic drive of Verdi’s music. Central to the cast is the Mongolian baritone Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar as the powerful King Nabucodonosor. He is joined by the powerful soprano Lidia Fridman in the demanding role of Abigaille and the experienced bass Michele Pertusi as Zaccaria. The impressive Coro del Teatro Regio di Parma, prepared by Martino Faggiani, provides the emotional anchor of the entire opera.
