Gala Verdiano

Verdi Festival – Teatro Regio di Parma
2026-10-10

The XXVI Festival Verdi 2026 celebrates one of the most important evenings of the year: on October 10, 2026, the 213th birthday of Giuseppe Verdi will be honored with a spectacular gala at the Teatro Regio di Parma. This Verdi Gala is a musical journey through the composer’s various creative periods and also features a fascinating excursion into the world of one of his most famous contemporaries – an evening fully embracing the festival theme “Mondi Lontani” (Distant Worlds).

Music trip to Parma with an opera of Giuseppe Verdi at the Teatro Regio in Parma or the Teatro Verdi in Busseto. The Festival Verdi takes place every year in September and October, on the occasion of the Maestro’s birthday. The operas and concerts of Giuseppe Verdi will be performed at the Teatro Regio in Parma, the Teatro Farnese and the Teatro Verdi in Busseto. Parma and Busseto were the hometowns of the Maestro and you can visit Verdi’s birthplace in Roncole (Busseto) and his villa in Sant’Agata.

The Teatro Regio di Parma stands as a beacon of operatic excellence and a centerpiece of the Verdi Festival. Built in 1829, this historic theater epitomizes the elegance and grandeur of Italy’s operatic tradition. Its neoclassical façade, adorned with majestic columns and intricate details, reflects the artistic splendor of its interiors, where gilded balconies, velvet seats, and opulent chandeliers create an atmosphere of timeless sophistication.

Renowned for its exceptional acoustics, the Teatro Regio allows audiences to experience every nuance of the music, making it a cherished venue for performers and listeners alike. The theater’s intimate yet majestic design creates a sense of connection between the stage and the audience, enhancing the emotional impact of every performance.

Located in the heart of Parma , the Teatro Regio is more than a cultural landmark—it is a gateway to exploring the rich artistic and culinary heritage of Verdi’s homeland. From its storied past to its vibrant present, this iconic venue remains a testament to Parma’s enduring love affair with opera and its devotion to preserving Verdi’s legacy.

The Gala is led by Maestro James Conlon, the renowned Verdi expert, who conducts the ORCHESTRA FILARMONICA TOSCANINI and the CORO DEL TEATRO REGIO DI PARMA. The program is deliberately contrasted and fascinatingly structured to underscore the festival’s thematic breadth:

  1. Verdi: Il Corsaro, Act II (Excerpts): The Gala opens with excerpts from Il Corsaro (The Corsair), an opera set on an island in the Aegean Sea. The music narrates the complex relationship between Corrado, the pirate, and Gulnara, the Pasha’s slave. This is an early, wildly romantic work by Verdi that explores the distant world of adventure and piracy.
  2. Gomes: Il Guarany, Overture: A special highlight is the performance of the Overture to the opera Il Guarany by Antônio Carlos Gomes (1836–1896). Gomes, a Brazilian composer and close friend of Verdi, celebrated great successes at La Scala in Milan. The opera, whose overture combines Brazilian and Italian elements, is thematically deeply rooted in “Mondi Lontani,” as it deals with indigenous peoples in Brazil – a direct look at another continent
  3. Verdi: Jérusalem, Act III, Scene I (Excerpts): The evening concludes with excerpts from Jérusalem, Verdi’s revision of his earlier opera I Lombardi for the Parisian audience (1847). The work is a prime example of French Grand Opéra and is set during the Crusades in the Distant Worlds of the Middle East. The chosen act, often musically and dramatically captivating, illuminates the drama of the Crusaders in the Holy Land.

The Gala is made possible by the generous support of the International Friends of Festival Verdi.

The Gala unites the outstanding quality of the festival ensembles with rising Verdi voices, many of whom are former graduates of the renowned Accademia Verdiana:

  • Maestro James Conlon is one of the foremost Verdi conductors of our time, guaranteeing a musically profound and stylistically impeccable interpretation of the complex program.
