Group: A day in the rock caves town of Matera
Matera was elected European Capital of Culture 2019. The rock town “Sassi of Matera” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
During the walk through Matera you will learn a lot about the life and history of the people who lived in the caves, the Sassi. The path winds up and down through the rock town. On your way you walk on the roofs of the rock churches and cave dwellings. Some of them are developed as hotels and holiday apartments. At the top you will discover a medieval necropolis.
Our professional tourist guides will tell you stories from life in the old town of Matera and you will discover how the water supply worked in this very dry area.
You will visit a rock church from the peasant civilization, which was completely carved into the rock.
For lunch we have reserved an excellent restaurant with typical cuisine with local dishes. It is located in the heart of Matera in a cave, in the real Sassi.
You can enjoy a delicious 4 course menu, local wine and finally an Amaro (digestive drink). The restaurant in the Sassi is beautifully designed and decorated. The interior consists of large vaults with a large glass window. In fine weather, you can sit on the terrace in the breathtaking atmosphere of the Sassi.
In the afternoon, the discovery of the cave town in the Sassi continues. You will visit a former farmhouse where life seems to be vividly modelled. You will be amazed at the building materials that people in the Sassi used for their homes.
Alternatively, you can drive in the afternoon to the murgia Materana natural park opposite. On a nature trail you will discover other accommodations as well as rock churches with antique murals, which are hard to find without a tourist guide.
