European Capital of Culture Matera 2019
Sassi at Matera
Matera is a very special city. The apartments were carved into the tuff stone cliffs thousands of years ago. What was left as building material was used for the front. This is how an entire city of cave dwellings and cave churches was built. Matera is located in Basilicata region, close to Puglia in southern Italy. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. In 2019, Matera celebrates the year as European Capital of Culture. The city is presenting itself nicely and there are fine hotels in the rocks.
