As part of the 2025 Donizetti Opera Festival, Il furioso nell’isola di S. Domingo returns to Bergamo in a new production that revives one of Donizetti’s most original and emotionally rich operas. Performances take place at the Teatro Donizetti on November 16, 21, and 29.
Premiered in 1833, this melodramma semiserio blends moments of comic lightness with profound psychological drama. Inspired by an episode from Cervantes’ Don Quixote, the story follows a man driven to madness by love’s betrayal, living in isolation on a Caribbean island. With a libretto by Jacopo Ferretti, the opera is a touching exploration of love, remorse, and redemption, infused with Donizetti’s rich melodic style.

Story and Background of Il furioso nell’isola di S. Domingo
Il furioso nell’isola di S. Domingo centers on Cardenio, a nobleman driven to madness by love’s betrayal. Isolated on a remote island in the Caribbean, he lives like a wild man, until the arrival of his brother and his former beloved Eleonora begins to awaken memories and the hope of reconciliation. The opera combines elements of romantic madness with gentle comic interludes and human emotion.
Premiered in Rome in 1833, the work reflects Donizetti’s growing interest in character psychology and emotional nuance. It remains one of his most original contributions to the semiseria tradition, balancing heartfelt tragedy with moments of levity and musical brilliance.
