Hiking on Via Spluga is both a fantastic experience and an interesting adventure of knowledge. In a largely intact nature you will find the traces a two thousand year history of crossing the Alps. The Via Spluga is a classic among long-distance hiking trails. It stretches over 65 km between Chiavenna in Lombardy (Italy) and Thusis in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. In the south, in Italy, Via Spluga is a continuation of the Sentiero del Viandante, which runs along Lake Como. Via Spluga leads through Montespluga through the legendary Cardinello Gorge. The highest point is the Splügen Pass at 2115 meters. In the north, however, it leads through the Viamala Gorge. The terribly beautiful gorge is the content of John Knittel’s novel Via Mala, which was made into a film with Maria Adorf as actor.
Although the Via Spluga was created by the Romans to get to the north of Europe, the Via Spluga is mostly described in the literature from north to south. In our proposal, we chose the section from Montespluga in the south to Splügen in the north, which you can go there and back in one day. The Spluga Pass is in the middle. The Via Spluga hike is well signposted and a nice tour for the whole family.
There is a parking place at the starting point in Montespluga at Albergo Posta. If you only want to hike in one direction, you can start Via Sluga in Isola and walk through the beautiful Cardinello gorge and the reservoir to Montespluga.
The hiking trail begins at the exit of the village, where you cross the bridge and from now on it goes uphill.
To the Splugen Pass you walk on the old mule track and pass the Cantoniera house. After about 50 minutes from Montespulga you will reach the highest point, the Splugen Pass. From the pass it goes downhill on the ancient Via Spluga in a northerly direction. A short detour to the Galleria dello Spluga is worthwhile. You reach the valley via two wooden bridges. The lower station of the Bodmastafel chairlift is located here. An underpass leads to the town of Splugen. Time for a refreshment. We turned back the same way the same day.
The village of Splugen in Switzerland is a typical alpine village with lush alpine pastures and a breathtaking view of the surrounding Alpine peaks.
