Opera: Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio)

by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Teatro Regio, Turin 2025-11-06 ... 2025-11-16

“To be human and good – and to forgive without selfishness”: this Enlightenment message closes Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio – a work where themes like kidnapping, slavery, and threats of execution are wrapped in comedic timing and dazzling music. Often seen as a precursor to The Magic Flute, this opera has its own distinct identity. The Orient it imagines is not mystical, but theatrical – exaggerated, absurd, and witty, in the 18th-century style of “turquerie”.

Musically, it shifts between heartfelt sincerity and vocal fireworks: Konstanze’s coloratura arias test any soprano’s limits, Osmin’s low notes are comedic gold, and the orchestration is rich with lively details. Though Emperor Joseph II famously remarked “Too many notes, dear Mozart!”, the 1782 Vienna premiere was a triumphant success – and the opera remains a favorite today.

In this new production at Teatro Regio, the elegant and vibrant staging from the Opéra Royal de Versailles is brought to life by French actor and director Michel Fau. Gianluca Capuano, one of today’s most acclaimed conductors, leads the orchestra.

Three young Europeans – Konstanze, her maid Blonde, and Pedrillo – have been kidnapped and sold as slaves to Turkish Pasha Selim. Konstanze’s fiancé, Belmonte, devises a plan to rescue them, aided by Pedrillo. The opera blends real danger with comic misunderstandings – especially with the grumpy guard Osmin and the lovers’ emotional tests.

In the climactic finale, the escape fails and the prisoners are brought before Selim. Yet instead of punishment, he grants mercy – embodying the Enlightenment ideal that evil should not be met with evil. Mozart’s score fuses vocal brilliance and dramatic expression in a work that is both entertaining and morally resonant.
