Embark on an extraordinary journey into the world of Vincenzo Bellini’s masterful opera Norma, which graces the enchanting open-air stage of the Arena Sferisterio in Macerata, Marche. The production, on the occasion of the 60th opera season at the Sferisterio, is brought to life by the director and documentary producer Maria Mauti, who is making her debut as an opera director. The orchestral magic will be conducted by esteemed bel canto expert Fabrizio Maria Carminati, who also serves as artistic director of the Bellini Theater in Catania, Italy. The outstanding cast includes Marta Torbidoni, an up-and-coming soprano from the Marche region who captivates audiences around the world as Norma, and Roberta Mantegna as Adalgisa. Antonio Poli takes on the role of Pollione and Riccardo Fassi plays Oroveso. “Norma,” a captivating two-act opera with a libretto by Felice Romani, tells a story of love, jealousy and revenge set against the backdrop of the spectacular Arena Sferisterio.

The Story of Norma
Set against the mythic echoes of Medea, Vincenzo Bellini’s “Norma” delves into a narrative brimming with love, jealousy, and the thirst for revenge among betrayed lovers. The opera, composed in a mere three months in 1831, faced a tumultuous premiere at Teatro alla Scala on December 26 of the same year. Now considered one of the greatest masterpieces of romantic opera, “Norma” takes the audience on an emotional rollercoaster. The eponymous character, Norma, a high priestess, finds herself entangled in a complex web of emotions, torn between love for the Roman proconsul Pollione and her duty to her people.
