Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca is one of the most beloved and iconic operas in the repertoire, renowned for its gripping narrative, emotional intensity, and Puccini’s exquisite music. From September 10th to 23rd, 2025, this timeless masterpiece will be brought to life on the historic stage of Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. Teatro di San Carlo, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious opera houses, provides the perfect setting for this dramatic tale of love, power, and sacrifice.
Tosca was premiered on January 14, 1900, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome and became quickly one of Puccini’s most celebrated operas. Based on the play La Tosca by French playwright Victorien Sardou, the opera is set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars and the fall of the Roman Republic.
Puccini’s score is filled with some of opera’s most memorable moments, including Tosca’s heart-wrenching aria “Vissi d’arte” and Cavaradossi’s poignant “E lucevan le stelle.”

The Story of Tosca
Set in Rome amidst the political turmoil of 1800, Tosca tells the story of the famous singer Floria Tosca, her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, and the sadistic police chief Baron Scarpia, who is determined to destroy them both. As Tosca struggles to protect the man she loves, she is forced into an impossible moral dilemma, which culminates in a sequence of devastating events.
The plot is fictitious, but is based on historical events from the war for the Roman Papal States. The opera in 3 acts is about the consul Cesare Angelotti, who was imprisoned in Castel Sant’Angelo . Thanks to the help of his friend Cavaradossi, he was able to escape and found hiding place in Cavaradossi’s villa. Tosca, Cavaradossi’s lover, however, became jealous.
The police chief Baron Scarpia had Angelotti searched for and his friend Cavaradossi tortured, but Cavaradossi did not want to betray his friend. Under this pressure, Tosca breaks down and reveals Angelotti’s hiding place, who then commits suicide.
To save her lover, who has since been sentenced to death, Tosca sells herself to the police chief Scarpia. When Scarpia has signed the letter of safe conduct for Cavaradossi, Tosca stabs the police chief Scarpia to escape with Cavaradossi.
The opera ends tragically for all the main actors: Cavaradossi, who was only supposed to be executed for show, is shot. Horrified, Tosca discovers that Sciarpa has betrayed her. In the meantime, the stabbed Sciarpa has been found, whereupon Tosca throws herself from the Castel Sant’Angelo.
