The Plot of Turandot
In the legendary city of Peking, the beautiful but cruel Princess Turandot poses a deadly challenge to her suitors: answer three riddles correctly, and win her hand in marriage; fail, and face execution. The latest suitor, the Prince of Persia, is led to his death, a grim spectacle witnessed by a crowd that includes the disguised Tartar Prince Calaf. Instantly captivated by Turandot’s beauty, Calaf resolves to win her, ignoring the pleas of his exiled father, Timur, and the faithful slave girl, Liù, who secretly loves him.
Calaf successfully answers Turandot’s three riddles, much to her dismay and fury. Seeing her distress, he offers her a riddle of his own: if she can discover his name by dawn, he will forfeit his life. Turandot decrees that none of her subjects shall sleep until the stranger’s name is known. The princess’s guards capture Timur and Liù, believing they know the prince’s identity. To protect Calaf, Liù endures torture before taking her own life, a sacrifice that deeply moves the cold-hearted princess. As dawn approaches, Calaf reveals his name, placing his fate in Turandot’s hands. Her icy heart finally melts, and she declares her love for him, bringing the opera to a triumphant and passionate conclusion.
