Experience an extraordinary evening of ballet that brings together the genius of three of the most influential choreographers of the 20th and 21st centuries—Serge Lifar , Roland Petit , and William Forsythe —at the historic Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. This performance, part of the 2024/2025 season, showcases a remarkable trio of works that highlight the evolution of ballet, from the elegant classicism of Lifar to the dramatic expressiveness of Petit, and the boundary-pushing contemporary style of Forsythe. Audiences will be treated to “Suite en Blanc” by Lifar, a showcase of pure, classical ballet technique set to Édouard Lalo’s music, “L’Arlésienne” by Roland Petit, an emotional and visually striking interpretation of Bizet’s music, and Forsythe’s “In the middle, somewhat elevated”, a dynamic and daring modern masterpiece set to the pulsing sounds of Thom Willems.

Teatro San Carlo
Teatro di San Carlo, one of the most prestigious and oldest opera houses in the world, offers a magnificent setting for this ballet event, further enhancing the artistic experience with its opulent architecture and rich cultural history. A perfect blend of classical and modern ballet, this triple bill offers an exciting journey through time, styles, and emotions. From the pristine lines of Lifar’s “Suite en Blanc”, where every movement exudes grace and precision, to the raw emotional intensity of Petit’s “L’Arlésienne”, which tells a tragic love story through powerful choreography, and finally, the cutting-edge innovation of Forsythe’s “In the middle, somewhat elevated”, which challenges traditional ballet structures and pushes dancers to their physical limits. The evening promises to be a celebration of ballet’s rich heritage and continued evolution, making it a must-see event for both ballet aficionados and newcomers alike.
History of the Ballet
This program represents three distinct eras of ballet. Serge Lifar’s “Suite en Blanc”, first performed in 1943, is a masterpiece of classical ballet. Lifar, a principal dancer with the Ballets Russes and later the Paris Opera Ballet, choreographed this piece to highlight the pure technique of ballet, devoid of narrative, where form and movement are the primary focus. The ballet, set to Édouard Lalo’s music, is a luminous example of the neoclassical style that bridges the gap between tradition and innovation.
Roland Petit’s “L’Arlésienne”, first staged in 1974, is a dramatic ballet based on the famous story of a young man driven to madness by unrequited love. Petit’s choreography captures the intense emotion of Georges Bizet’s music, blending narrative storytelling with lyrical, expressive dance. Petit, a key figure in post-war French ballet, is known for his ability to merge the theatrical with the classical, creating works that are both visually stunning and deeply moving.
William Forsythe’s “In the middle, somewhat elevated”, created in 1987, revolutionized the world of contemporary ballet. Forsythe’s radical approach to movement and space challenges the boundaries of traditional ballet, and this piece, set to Thom Willems’ electronic score, is a high-energy, abstract work that demands extraordinary precision and athleticism from the dancers. Forsythe’s influence on modern ballet is immense, and his works continue to inspire choreographers and dancers around the world.
