After their acclaimed performance of The Sleeping Beauty in 2023, the Czech National Ballet returns to Teatro Regio Torino with Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. Under the choreography of Leonid Lavrovsky, the company’s dancers – hailing from 18 nations – embody the full range of Shakespeare’s emotions: love, hate, tenderness, and despair. Prokofiev’s score pulses with dramatic energy and vivid color, like a series of theatrical panels that mirror the tragedy’s shifting moods.
Originally planned for the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the ballet premiered in Brno in 1938 due to conflicts with Soviet authorities. Prokofiev first considered a happy ending – claiming that death was “undanceable” – but ultimately embraced the tragic finale. The result: a powerful fusion of primal force and neoclassical refinement that also inspired filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein.
This production follows John Cranko’s legendary version, staged by Jane Bourne with stunning designs by Jürgen Rose. Václav Zahradník conducts the Orchestra of Teatro Regio, while the Czech National Ballet brings this timeless story of love and loss to life.
Plot and Background of Romeo and Juliet
In Verona, two feuding families fuel violence in the streets. Romeo and Juliet fall in love at a Capulet ball and secretly marry. But tragedy strikes: Tybalt kills Romeo’s friend; Romeo retaliates and is banished. Juliet fakes her death to escape an arranged marriage, but the message never reaches Romeo. Believing her dead, he takes poison. Juliet wakes, sees him lifeless, and takes her own life.
Prokofiev’s score gives this story sweeping emotional depth – tender, brutal, and unforgettable – a true classic of modern ballet.
