The Story of Madama Butterfly
The story of Madame Butterfly takes place around the turn of the century in Japan, near Nagasaki. Butterfly is the geisha of an American naval officer who marries Butterfly. Butterfly is rejected by her family and her husband left her shortly after the wedding. When he comes back, he brings his new wife from America and wants to take Butterfly’s son with him. Madame Butterfly stabs herself with her father’s dagger.
The opera Madama Butterfly was first performed at La Scala in Milan in 1904, at that time in two acts. In 1904 the opera was rewritten into three acts. The opera Madama Butterfly is a feature of every opera house and will be performed at the Arena di Verona during the 2023 Summer Festival.
